Student Loans – A Quick Guide

Obtaining a college education and having to pay for it can often mean using a student loan. A lot of the people offering student loans are able to give good deals on interest rates and tax credits, as they are specifically tailored to aid willing students meet the not inconsiderable expense of a higher education.

As always, the first thing you must do prior to getting a student loan is do some research and have a look at the various types of loan available and who are offering them. These loans are offered by colleges, private lenders, or even the government. In fact a student loan from the government might be your best bet, as you can obtain a better interest rate.

Then there is the subsidized loan which is income based and very generously the government will pay the interest until such time as the student is in a position to repay the debt i.e., gets a job. Another type of loan is where the parents of the student can take out a loan; to meet their sibling’s college expenses, this one is called the Federal plus loan.

Next, there are bank loans, which as usual come with different interest rates, and various payment options. These institutions will probably require some sort of guarantee, which is usually in the form of collateral. These banks don’t like taking too many risks, can’t say I blame them. The college loan is the most expensive option and you should only really consider it in an absolute emergency.

At the end of the day, some sort of loan may be the only way for a student to successfully finance their education, but it must be remembered that just like any other type of loan, a student loan is a serious financial obligation, and has to be repaid at some point.

Personally, I think that governments in the relatively well off western countries can never offer too much help to anybody wanting to further their education, as it will benefit the respective country, and everybody in it, and in the long run, the world.

The Girly Girl’s Guide to Father’s Day

If you have trouble coming up with the perfect Father’s Day gift, you’re not alone. Choosing a thoughtful gift for Dad can be fairly easy, but choosing a thoughtful gift that he’ll like is another story.

    Mushy yet manly

When we’re buying gifts for Mom, sentimentality is often the guiding force. A delicate ceramic figurine that symbolizes your bond of friendship and trust will mean a lot to her. Try giving Dad the same gift you gave Mom and you’ll get a confused look and a collectible item that sits in its box on a shelf in the garage. That’s not to say that Dads don’t appreciate sentimental gestures, you just have to know how to do it right.

Usually, men and emotions don’t mix. They’ve got their own ways of telling the people around them that they care. A slap on the back, a cold beer, an awkward joke – those are Dad’s ways of saying, “You’re important to me.” So how do you get your communication styles to mesh?

A personal gift is worth a thousand embroidered words

To some women, a fish gutting knife is not a gift that says, “Thanks for being a supportive and caring father.” But to guys who love the great outdoors, this Father’s Day gift is a statement that you really understand your dad.

To show Dad how much you care, you have to show that you get who he is. If he’s into sports, tickets to a game, a jersey from his favorite team or a cushion for stadium bleachers are all wonderful gifts. If he’s into techie gadgets, anything iPod, a laptop accessory or a digital camera memory card will leave him smiling.

The point is to think about the things Dad loves doing best and find gifts that relate. Does he barbecue dinner every night in the summer? Does a fine cigar make his weekend? Does he read The Economist cover to cover every week? Giving Dad a gift that reflects his hobbies and interests shows him that you love the guy he is and think he’s altogether fabulous.

    Say it right

The art of the Father’s Day card is a subtle and difficult one to master. The same rules apply as above. If you and your dad don’t exchange “I Love Yous” on a regular basis, an overly sentimental card may leave him uncomfortable and unsure how to respond.

We suggest finding a blank card with a nice design and writing in a few heartfelt words. Thank him for something specific like helping you learn to drive or supplying funds for extracurricular activities in college (shopping should be a sport). You don’t have to go overboard on the mushy thoughts. A few phrases of appreciation for his support and hard work show him that you know how much effort he’s put in to providing for his family.

No two dads are the same. If your dad has a sentimental streak and has kept every one of his #1 Father trophies, you’re on the right track with your gift giving strategy. If he’s not particularly open about his feelings, focus on the things you do know about him. Showing Dad that you love him for who he is can be the best gift he gets.

Central Florida sports fans – visitors and residents alike – will have plenty to cheer about during 2007 with such popular spectator sports as the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (AFL) and the University of Central Florida (UCF) Golden Knights football team. Orlando is also bustling with baseball action during Spring Training as the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros come to town this spring, as well as Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp starting in late July.

The Orlando Magic play all their home games at the 17,500-seat Amway Arena (formerly known as the TD Waterhouse Centre) in downtown Orlando. Founded in 1989, the Orlando Magic advanced to the NBA Finals during the 1994-95 season. Many basketball superstars have played for the Orlando Magic over the years such as Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway and Tracy McGrady. The current Orlando Magic roster includes Dwight Howard, Grant Hill, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick. Brian Hill is the head coach of the Orlando Magic, which compete in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The Magic’s 2006-07 regular season schedule concludes on April 18, 2007, against the Miami Heat. Construction on a new, 20,000-seat Orlando Magic Arena in downtown Orlando is scheduled to begin in early 2008.

Founded in 1991, the Orlando Predators, who captured the Arena Bowl Championship in 2000, compete in the 19-team AFL. The Predators have made the playoffs 15 years in a row and compete in the Southern Division of the National Conference against the likes of the Austin Wranglers, Dallas Desperados, Georgia Force, Las Vegas Gladiators, New Orleans Voodoo and Tampa Bay Storm. The 16-game regular season includes eight home games at the Amway Arena (a.k.a. “The Jungle”) and runs from early February to late May. Jay Gruden is the head coach of the Orlando Predators, which finished the 2006 AFL season with a 10-6 record and lost to Chicago in ArenaBowl XX. The Predators open the 2007 season on March 2, 2007, against the Tampa Bay Storm.

The UCF Golden Knights football team competes in Conference USA against such teams as East Carolina University, Marshall University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Tulane University, University of Alabama Birmingham, University of Houston, University of Memphis, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas-El Paso and University of Tulsa. George O’Leary is the head coach of the Golden Knights, which finished with a record of 4-8 during the 2006 season. The Golden Knights formerly played their home games at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando but a new stadium is currently under construction at the UCF campus. The 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium is set to be completed in time for the Golden Knights’ home opener against the Texas Longhorns on September 15, 2007.

Central Florida is also the site of Major League Baseball (MLB) Spring Training when the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros arrive in February 2007. The Braves play 16 home games at a 7,500-seat, state-of-the-art ballpark within Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, while the Houston Astros compete at the recently renovated Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee. The Braves’ Spring Training season runs from February 28 to March 29, 2007, while the Astros will be here from March 1 to March 31, 2007. In addition, the 2002 World Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers spend Training Camp at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex starting in late July. Practices are open to the public and admission is free for Buccaneers Training Camp.

Other spectator sports scheduled to take place in the Orlando area over the next year include the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl, which pits the second-ranked college football teams of the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium on New Year’s Day; the Silver Spurs Rodeo, the largest rodeo East of the Mississippi, which takes place at the Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee from February 16-18, 2007; and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club (March 12-18, 2007) and Walt Disney World Resort Classic (November 1-4, 2007), two immensely popular golf tournaments that draw some of the world’s top professional golfers on the PGA tour.

Orlando visitors should plan ahead and pre-order tickets for spectator sports they wish to attend during their stay, according to Kyle Collins, Director of Interactive Marketing for HotelsCorp.com.

“Tickets to sporting events, as well as theme park tickets, can often be added to discount vacation packages, allowing families to enjoy significant savings on their Orlando vacations,” said Collins.

While there are many forms of teaching in the Christian education arena, there are a few basic tenets that are applicable across the board. We will focus on these tenets as they apply to “formal” teaching (classroom, discussion, lecture, discipling relationships), but they are just as important in informal settings.

    1. Set goals. This is probably the biggest omission for teachers. We know and want to communicate a lot of “stuff,” but we haven’t clearly defined our goal and purpose. Without a goal and purpose, our teaching wanders and we won’t see the fulfillment the Lord intends in our ministries.

It may be helpful to choose a verse or passage to be a guide for your teaching. Then, as you prepare a lesson or a series of lessons, ask yourself questions to see if you are meeting your goals. For example, if we were looking at Ephesians 4:11-16, we might ask ourselves:

    • How am I equipping people to serve through this lesson?
    • How am I building up the body of Christ?
    • How am I succeeding as an example of Christ-like character? How am I failing?
    • What doctrines am I teaching on? How can I better communicate them?
    • What practical application will my hearers draw from my lesson?
    • What sin or error am I confronting?
    • What spiritual disciplines am I promoting? Am I demonstrating them in my own life?
    • How am I encouraging intimacy with God?
    • How am I exhorting people to love?
    • Is Christ the beginning, ending, and focus of my teaching?

Specific lessons and series of lessons will, of course, have additional specific goals particular to the topic at hand. These goals should be clearly delineated before teaching begins, and regular evaluations should take place to be certain that goals are being achieved.

    2. Put forth effort. Give your preparation – and your delivery – the best of yourself. Don’t expect fulfillment in ministry if you consistently “cobble something together” at the last minute, are rushing around the house to get out on time, and are tired when it’s time to teach. You and your hearers will get the most out of your teaching if you put forth solid, concentrated effort into preparation time, and are rested and enthusiastic when it’s time to speak.

    3. Be orderly. Build a lesson as you would build a house. Lay a foundation and develop your points thoroughly and completely to a conclusion. You want your hearers to walk away with several things: facts, understanding, and application.

    4. Avoid tangents. Whether they come from you or from one of your hearers, nip tangents in the bud (unless there is a distinct reason and the Spirit’s leading to follow them and expand on them). Lessons should be tight, allowing no room for wandering or drifting. You will not accomplish your goals unless you stay focused.

    5. Combine orthodoxy and orthopraxy. Each lesson should contain both right teaching (orthodoxy) and instruction on right practice (orthopraxy). Doctrine in a vacuum will not be remembered or be seen as applicable. Guidance on right practice will not become ingrained unless the reasons and doctrines behind it are understood. Instruction on the Word of God and the walk of God should go hand-in-hand whenever we teach.

    6. Make it practical. Every lesson should be a “rubber-meets-the-road” lesson. If it’s not practical, it won’t be remembered. If it doesn’t apply to life today, to my life today, then it’s a waste of my time. Draw lessons from life today, and show how to apply lessons to life today.

    7. Be dynamic. Whatever your teaching style, make it dynamic. Dynamic comes from the Greek word “dunamis,” or power. Whether you lecture or lead discussions, whether you enjoy acting your lessons in front of a crowd or prefer quiet times in a circle, your teaching style should be power-filled through the Spirit. Be creative. Be compelling. Be challenging. Be excited. Be intense. However you speak, grab your hearers and hold them – only then will they hear what you’re saying.

    8. Encourage interaction. In almost all cases, people will learn more from a class that they participate in. Ask questions. Encourage responses and discussion. Be sure people are understanding what you’re saying. Welcome input. Even a class that is predominantly lecture has room for learner participation. Frequently a question and answer time will serve to bring home the doctrines and lessons taught.

    9. Repeat and review. You only remember a fraction of what you hear – so be sure your listeners hear what’s most important many times. Review the key points of past lessons. Review points made earlier in a given lesson. Repeat truth until it becomes ingrained in your hearers.

    10. Handouts and homework. Don’t be afraid to ask your listeners to put forth effort on their own part. Give handouts with fill-ins and room for notes at each class – it encourages people to write down key points, therefore aiding the learning process (the more senses you engage in learning, the better you will remember). Give homework. Ask people to read and think and prepare for the next class, or to follow up on the one just given. Remind your hearers that Christian education does not happen for one hour on a Sunday – it must be a part of daily life.

    11. Expect excellence. People will rise to your expectations of them. Never patronize or act condescendingly toward people. Don’t give shallow or fluff-filled lessons. Dig deep into the truth and your listeners will fall in love with the truth, too.

    12. Pray. Pray for yourself and your hearers. Pray for your preparation time, your sanctification, and your delivery. Pray for their attentiveness, understanding, and commitment to walk with the Lord. Pray for discernment, insight, and wisdom. Your ministry will only succeed if it is bathed in and founded on prayer.

Ocean Kayaks – a Buying Guide

    Copyright (c) 2008 Arnold Hexden

Ocean kayaks are tremendous fun and as long as you are near to the sea you will have no problem learning how to do it. Ocean kayaks are different to river kayaks in so much as they are longer than the river kayak and are designed so that you can paddle over long distances. They also need to have far more room in them in order to carry gear an equipment.

When choosing ocean kayaks it is advisable to have tried the sport in advance, most people who take up ocean kayaking have experienced it whilst on vacation or college, however there are usually clubs or hire centers which will rent you a kayak by the hour.

    Buying Ocean Kayaks

So you have looked on the internet and thumbed through catalogs, what is the next step? It is always preferable to physically see the kayak as this gives you a much better feeling of size and weight, so if there is a kayak store near to you go along there an talk to the sales person, write a list of questions or even make a mental note of what you need to know and generally quiz him about ocean kayaking.

The other benefit of being able to visit a store is that you can sit in the kayak and get a feel of volume and what ocean kayaking could feel like. Things to look out for are strength and robustness, look for a strong plastic kayak as there will be times when you will have to haul it over rocks and sharp pebbles. You need to feel comfortable in it as there may be times when you ill be sitting in it for long periods so make sure there is room to stow gear for your trip.

    Solo Or Tandem Ocean Kayaks

Depending on your preferences you have a choice whether to go for a one man kayak or a tandem kayak. There are many families who just strap their tandem ocean kayak to the roof of the van and head for the beach. It can be great fun to share the paddling with a partner, so be sure to check out the range of tandems before making your final decision.

    Where To Buy Ocean kayaks

Once you have made up your mind which kayak to buy there are many places to purchase them’ you could start with the shop which gave you valuable advice, however if you are on a budget you need to compare as many buying options as possible. Some of the more specialized boats can be expensive – so look for interest free credit.

If you have the cash and it is burning a hole in your pocket the best bargains are usually online, simply enter you requirements i.e. “ocean kayak” into he search engine and refine the results as you go. The chances are that you may even be able to pick up a cheap used ocean kayak on auction sites or classified’s like US free ads.

Which ever route you take for purchasing one of the many ocean kayaks on the market, once you own it you will have it for years to come and should you tire of it they sell well on the second hand market.

    German Higher Education

There are near 30 universities and 220 Fachhochschulen or Universities of Applied Science in Germany, these higher educational establishments are included in the educational guide of Germany and represented on web-sites. But one unpleasant thing is that all information in German and not everyone speaks this language. Admission often depends upon the knowledge of German language. But there are several educational establishments where the teaching is carried out in English.
In Germany for the long time master’s degree was the first degree which could be received after graduation of certain period of studies. Today it seems that system of education are going to change. As a result of recent educational reforms, the two-level program of degrees has been introduced. Now first degree which can be receives is bachelor’s degree and the second one is master’s degree. Bachelor’s degree was introduces because a lot of students leave their studies without receiving a diploma. Today with introduction of bachelor’s degree there is an opportunity to leave educational establishment earlier.
At Fachhochschulen programs are more professionally orientated and there you can get credentials at bachelor’s level. But Fachhochschulen of new type also offer master’s degree for talented students.
In Germany there are international higher educational establishments which have close collaboration with foreign institutions. The sphere of private higher education is developing very fast in Germany in present time. Some of private universities can be international ones, like Internationale Fachhochschule Bad Honnef, others are corporate universities like Volkswagen AutoUni. But last type of universities usually admits only employees.
In general if you want to be accepted to one of German universities, you will have to work a lot, because it is not an easy process.
